Fresh and Local

Pick of the WeekSo Much to Celebrate!

In honor of National Pride Month, Crescent City Farmers Market celebrates LGBTQ+ farmers and vendors at our markets, each promoting a more inclusive landscape for our food system. Activism, sustainable farming, and co-operative land management are but a few ways in which queer farmers are redefining agriculture. Considering the environmental and economic impacts of this work, we can say that LGBTQ+ food producers are making the world a better place! While the LGBTQ+ community - the trans community especially - still faces many challenges, we are excited to see the positive shifts in agriculture as LGBTQ+ farmers and food producers help create a more nourishing world.

Speaking of nourishing, there are few things more satisfying than a colorful diet. Here’s how you can eat the rainbow at the Crescent City Farmers Market!

Pink - peaches, radish
Red - Creole tomatoes, new potatoes, peppers, watermelon, beets
Orange - carrots, butternut squash, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe
Yellow - summer squash, peppers, corn
Green - zucchini, okra, pepper, onions, cucumber
Blue - blueberries
Violet - eggplant, onions, turnips, blackberries

Pick of the WeekFree Training: Hurricane Preparedness: Insurance Options, Preparation Best Practices, & Communication Technology

Join us on Wednesday, June 29th from 5-7pm for the next free virtual training in our spring vendor technical assistance series, “Hurricane Preparedness: Insurance Options, Preparation Best Practices, & Communication Technology”. With the recent Hurricane Ida behind us, and 2022 hurricane season fast approaching, this class will help to prepare small-scale farmers in exploring insurance options for crops (including the non-insured crop disaster assistance program), farm, and greenhouse, include a share out of hurricane prep best practices as learned by southeast Louisiana farmers last season and discuss communication technology options to best share recovery resources in the aftermath of a major storm.

The conversation will be moderated by Angelina Harrison of Market Umbrella and presenters include: Brandon Faust of Faust Farms, Mike Odin from the Farm Bureau Agency, Margee Green of Sprout NOLA, Noah Skinner from Farm Tek, and more. RSVP here!

Pick of the WeekTwo Days of Tomatoes!

Come join us for not one, but TWO days of tomato goodness as we sample and savor a variety of local tomatoes! We will be sharing tastings of the various tomatoes we have available in the market and participants will have an opportunity to vote on their favorite! Tomato Tastings will be held during the Tuesday, June 28 Uptown market and the Thursday, June 30 market at the Lafitte Greenway.

Vendor of the Week

Slicey McSlicer Sharpening Service Slicey McSlicer Sharpening Service

It is with great anticipation that we excitedly introduce our newest vendor, Joshua Bertucci, the owner and chief sharpener of Slicey McSlicer Knife Sharpening. Over the past 10 years, Joshua has honed his skills in sharpening, specializing in culinary blades. Today, Joshua’s sharpening skills are known across the city as he sharpens knives, scissors, and other various blades for both residential clients and some of the most well-known restaurant establishments in New Orleans. Joshua’s passion for sharpening started with marine life-saving equipment, which required the near-constant use of a work knife, and quickly expanded into other blades. There are few things as satisfying as effortlessly slicing through an onion or tomato in preparation for a great New Orleans meal — so don’t forget to bring your knives with you the next time you come to shop at our Tuesday or Thursday market!

Recipe of the Week

Big Queer Cold Noodles Big Queer Cold Noodles

Happy Pride! This recipe from a recent Bon Appetit has quickly become a staff fave. Providing the perfect opportunity to eat the rainbow, it’s endlessly riffable, comes together quickly for a one-dish weeknight meal, is nutritionally balanced, is an excellent opportunity to use up little bits of this and that left in the crisper drawer, and a cool dish perfect for this hot weather and you can customize each person’s servings to be able to accommodate pickier eaters - it checks all our boxes! Try it with fresh whole wheat pasta from Costantini Pasta, hot peppers instead of or in addition to sweet ones, roasted eggplant or raw crisp-tender summer squash matchsticks, alternate nut butters, or add a protein - the extra firm tofu from Veggi Co-Op comes readily to mind. We find that with these proportions we get extra sauce, which is great for a future crudite plate, or a gussied-up ants on a log.
