Let’s Seize Summer! | June 20, 2022

Fresh & Local:

Let’s Seize Summer!

The high temperatures of June bring the heat-loving cucurbits - squash, cucumbers and melons - and the sultry nightshades - eggplant, tomatoes, and potatoes. We are in the midst of peak tomato season and sweet corn is making its brief appearance. This time of year, also referred to around the market as fruit salad season, you’ll find blueberries, blackberries, cantaloupe and peaches and we’ll soon start seeing watermelon, too. Markets are hot, but there’s plenty to cool off with, from popsicles available from Amanda’s Fresh Fruit Specialties and J&D Blueberry to the rainbow of juice/tea/fruit muddled choices available from new vendor Fresh Fruit Sensations. Ice cold beverages will keep you hydrated and replenish your sweat-depleted electrolytes, and at CCFM the options include strawberry, blueberry and probiotic lemonades, kombucha, and fresh squeezed juices. If you’re growing your own garden at this time of year, you’ll see increased pest pressure and if you have any container plants, you’ll need to build daily watering into your schedule. And if despite your best efforts you need to rely on your local farmer to provide those juicy, ripe tomatoes, CCFM vendors have you covered!

FYI, road work along Leake Ave by the Uptown market may prevent access to the lot from the levee side. Alternatively, you can come in on Broadway and travel through the parking lot back to the market space.

The self-proclaimed Jimi Hendrix of farming is back at the market! Tony Accardo comes from a long family line of farmers in Grand Point, Louisiana, representing Louisiana Gourmet Produce. The Accardos farm on rich perique soil only found in St. James Parish, where the robust, fruity perique tobacco is grown, specializing in heirloom varieties of tomatoes, hot peppers, root vegetables, and more. This time of year you can find Louisiana Gourmet Produce at Tuesday and Thursday markets with boxes and boxes of heirloom tomatoes! Next Tuesday at market (June 28th), our Programs team is hosting a tomato taste testing event where you can come see for yourself just how good these tomatoes are!

Recipe of the Week:

Fried Green Tomatoes

We are officially in the thick of tomato season! At market you can find green tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, creole tomatoes, and an abundance of heirloom tomatoes! Unlike all other tomatoes, green tomatoes may not be as enjoyable cut up and eaten raw. So what can we do with them? Well who doesn’t love fried food?!?
