Baby Goats and Cooking Demo at Sunday Market! | June 6, 2022

Fresh & Local:

Cool as a Cucumber

As the season heats up we are seeing more and more hot weather crops at the market, among them the beloved cucumber. A kid-approved and versatile vegetable, cucumbers are high in water and low in just about everything else, making them an optimal snack for the summer. Plus, they have a high level of electrolytes, keeping you hydrated and your thirst quenched during these hot months. Perfect in many salads (like the one featured below in our Recipe of the Week) or amongst crudite or as a condiment, their crunchy texture makes for a great chip alternative, made for dipping. In addition to standard slicing cucumbers, you’ll find tender, crisp pickling cukes which are great raw, heirloom suyo and lemon cucumbers, among others at the CCFM. Unlike the wax-covered cucumbers you find at the grocery store, you’ll notice a sweeter, tastier flavor when you buy them from Poche Family Farm, LA Gourmet Produce, Joe Fekete Family Farm, Indian Springs Farmers Association, Mendez Farm, River Queen Greens and other CCFM vendors at markets and through our home delivery boxes offered through Market Match partners Top Box Foods.

Vendor of the Week:

Cherry Creek Orchards

It’s June y’all, and peaches have arrived at the market! Our friends at Cherry Creek Orchards located in Pontotoc, MS have returned with sweet offerings. Local peaches are picked when ripe, so they’re fresh, juicy and delish - come get your peach fix! When buying peaches, look for those that are firm or just starting to soften up, depending on when you plan to eat them. Store them at room temperature away from direct light until fully ripe. Once soft, put them in your fridge and eat within five days for maximum freshness and flavor. If you’re like us, you may get excited while buying and purchase more than you can eat. Luckily, peaches are great to freeze so don’t be afraid to stock up and keep enjoying them all summer long.

Recipe of the Week:
